A lapse in judgment, a terrible storm at sea and bad luck conspired to put American Rick Townson in port in Cuba with hundreds of pounds of marijuana hidden on the boat he helped sail. Arrested and left to the dubious mercy of dictator Fidel Castro's hostile government, a man who had never before been a criminal was forced to spend nine years in the hellholes of the island's prison system. With an eye for the absurdities of captivity, from the jailers' attempts at political "re-education" to the daily battle against rats and hunger, Townson candidly tells the story of his ordeal in HOTEL FIDEL CASTRO, along with the often outrageous tales of other foreigners trapped in the web of Cuba's twisted justice system.
Hotel Fidel Castro eBook Rick Townson
Everyone's fear is to get caught up in the justice system of a foreign country where they jail you and throw away the key. Especially in Cuba where the U.S. has no power. Ok, the author took a stupid risk and made some bad choices to land him in a Cuban jail, but his experiences after that are horrifying. Still, he maintained his good humor and dare I believe he learned some valuable life lessons during the long years of his incarceration. He didn't wallow in a sea of bitterness, but made the best of an intolerable situation, which he writes about with fascinating details and insight. A real page-turner and an excellent read.Product details

Hotel Fidel Castro eBook Rick Townson Reviews
Mr. Townson is a natural story-teller and recounts his time in Cuban jails with such keen powers of observation - and recall - that you'll swear you're right there with him. His insights into the dynamics of inter-personal relationships - both within the Hotel Castro
as well as under a dictatorship, in general - are deep and thoughtful. This is a thrill-ride of a memoir you won't soon forget.
An incredible story about the Stalinist regime in Communist Cuba. The author goes into great detail about the inhumane conditions of not only the prisoners but the Cuban citizens as well. Many members of Democrat party, in the USA, support this regime and this should be a must read for them.
Awesome read. I cried four times. I recommend this book to anyone but especially those with interest in an insider's view of Fidel Castro's tyrannical oppression of the people of Cuba.
Not the best written book, but definitely interesting and an easy read. I read it in three days.
I met Rick when he picked us up this morning in his cab in Key West and took us to the Key West Airport. He told us about his detainment in Cuba on the way so I downloaded the version after he dropped us off at the airport. I read the book on the two flights home. I speak from personal experience when I say Rick is a great storyteller... in person and in the book. It's unbelievable story that all Americans should read. Read it and you will know exactly what I mean. Thanks for the heads up in the cab, Rick. I will look for the follow up book.
Fascinating and riveting! Spellbinding account of one man's ordeal in the Cuban prison system. Reminiscent of the "Midnight Express" ordeal of Billy Hayes in Turkey. Should be a lesson for anyone considering the risky venture of smuggling pot by boat from Jamaica to the US. Less than 90 miles from their Key West destination, Rick Townson and Captain "Know it all" are forced to pull in to Havana after a series of bad decisions and poor judgment, not to mention daunting weather challenges. From the harrowing account while at sea to the rollercoaster chronicle of the hopes and despairs while in the Cuban prisons, this is a great read!
A chilling true account of a man who makes a stupid mistake and ends up incarcerated in Castro's Cuba. His misery, hopeless attempts at getting the U.S. government to help him, and the brutality of his treatment makes this novel a harrowing but satisfying novel.
