I've certainly read my share of adventure/thrillers where the central premise was our hero/heroine is an archaeologist (with a sideline talents as ex-Special Forces, ex-assassin, ex-you-name-it, etc.) who bounces all over the globe to exotic locales in order to find and protect some outrageous artifacts in order to deny it from falling into the nefarious mega-baddie or super-secret cabal who've been after it for centuries so as to bring about the end of the world... you know the type of book I'm talking about, I'm sure.

Most are kind of average, and that's ok - they're not meant to be high literature. Just the equivalent of a popcorn movie. Some are better than others. This one is definitely better. I was very familiar with much of the WWII related points, but completely taken aback with the fascinating information relayed about the bible(s) and the Crusades. Excellent. There a few tiny points regarding behavior of the main character, but when isn't there? I enjoyed this one.

Four and a half stars.

The Sword of Moses Dominic Selwood 9780992633202 Books Reviews

I liked the story, but the book bogs down with much too much detail over and over until by the time I read 80% I was skipping pages and hoping for the end! It wasn't necessary to spend pages and pages to explain historical parts of the bible, crusades, individuals, etc. A brief paragraph would have been sufficient. Also, for a few chapters it seemed like the author was doing his best to prove Christianity and Judism are merely takeoffs from earlier religions of pagan beliefs and everything was just stories. That made me very uncomfortable..
This novel is a work of fiction. It is difficult to balance fiction and facts when dealing with religious text. As a practicing Christian, there were times I wanted to just scream. The author writes in a fast paced and exciting style. I literally devoured the book. The characters are well developed and complex.
I suppose that it is impossible not to injected your own views into the text at some point. The author has very clearly rejected any basis for absolute truth. Everything is relative.
He skips over any meaningful discussion of Christ's unique message and life. The concept of writings being "inspired" is clearly not in the authors personal notes.
Thus, the book resorts to circular reasoning at best.
Having said all this, the book was a great fictional read.
My challenge for Mr Selwood , is to take the blinders off, and let the facts guide you.
"Without faith it is impossible to see God" ( or please Him)
Hebrews 116
Thank you for writing this novel.
I didn't even finish it, and that is a rarity. I read a lot of Science Fiction and Fantasy and I am capable and willing of suspending disbelief for the sake of a good storyline, provided that the Characters and their interactions are reasonably realistic. If that were the case here, I'd know how the book ends. I can give two examples, because that is as far as I got. THE General in charge of the Middle Eastern theater of operations is not aware that Babylon is located in Iraq...come on. And then the almost hysterical overreaction of a highly trained soldier...come on. I hate to give bad reviews to writers, because they are doing (or trying) something I can't do. But this example reads to me like a bad movie script turned into an even worse book. Sorry about your feelings Mr. Selwood.
An engrossing story often for lost in the descriptions of buildings, locations, and objects. I get frustrated by main characters who repeatedly self doubt themselves which Dr. Curzon does. Otherwise great story.
I enjoyed the beginning and ending of this book. Mr. Selwood does an outstanding job in researching many esoteric historical facts and legends which give verisimilitude to the story. My only problem with the book was the character of the heroine and the plot line. Ava Curzon seems to enjoy putting herself in impossibly life threatening situations from which she is miraculously rescued at the last moment, kind of a combination between the "perils of Pauline" and Indiana Jones. This makes for a suspenseful page turner, but the repetitive deadly danger followed by miraculous rescue tends to get a bit monotonous after a while. It is like reading a long succession of cliff hangers. Still, this is a good, quick read if you're looking for some escape literature.
THE SWORD OF MOSES (The Sword of Moses) by Dominic Selwood, is a story that covers several genres. If you are into the search for archaeological treasures, the occult/mysticism, the rise of the Fourth Reich, or just plain old secret agents running loose, then this is the book for you. There is almost non-stop action as the heroine, Dr. Ava Curzon, a retired MI6 operative turned archaeologist, battles the bad guys on every street corner in her quest for a biblical artifact. The story covers events from Ethiopia to Baghdad to London to the Loch Ness area of Scotland. How she sorts out the good guys from the bad guys is a challenge that the author is definitely up to. When all is said and done, there is the possibility of a sequel, maybe. I give this one four stars because some of the breaks in the action are long, almost tedious descriptions of historical events, mostly around the Crusades and the Knight's Templar. This author will go on my "to be read list".
NOTE For you purists out there (you know who you are), this author is an Oxford grad, and therefore the book is written in British English rather than American English. You will find some words spelled differently (artefact instead of artifact, licence instead of license). Accept this, and enjoy the book.
